1991 Ford F150 Lariat. I have a noise coming from under the truck after engine is turned off. Its a high pitched whine. Whatever it is, it is draining the battery. Help
The noise could be your fuel pump continuing to run after the ignition is turned off. This would kill a battery quickly.
Locate the fuel pump relay - it should be in the power distribution box under the hood generally just in front of the master cylinder. Tap the relay and see if the noise quits. If still noisy, pull the relay. If the noise stops, the problem is the relay.
If the fuel pump is not the problem, you can selectively pull fuses until that mystery noise stops to locate the problem component.
Thanks for the information. I'm pretty sure that it is the fuel pump relay. Not being much of a mechanic I'm not sure what I have to do now. Do I have to replace the fuel pump?
Start with pulling the relay to see if the noise stops. Test parts before you replace them. You may be able to switch two relays to see if the problem moves with the relay.
I also have a 1994 F150. When I look at the relays in it they just pull out and are replaceable. The ones in the 1991 F150, where the problem exists, appears to be one big unit. I don't see any replaceable relays.
