I have a 1998 expy with a 5.4L v8 (330cid) that just locked up this morning. Seems that after the last oil change (3 weeks ago at walmart) the oil has just decided to leave the truck. No signs of leaking, no smoke. We think someone messed with the truck, but right now that's not important. We wanted to know if any other year 5.4's would work in this truck. Be it from a f105 or a Nav, or where ever, is there any other engine that will work in this truck. Thanks for the help guys.
I would say that any year expy will fit right in-I would also say to get the highest horsepower one you can. I was told that a Nav. engine won't because it has extra wire hookups and such. I'm not sure about F150's because they might have a slightly different set up with them. I got a rebuilt 00 expy long block from Ford just a few weeks ago and it cost about $5000 installed. They give a $1500 core credit. Check your radiator at the same time-as mine was "shot" at 65k miles. I'd recommend some headers be installed while you have the new engine installed-----the factory headers are hideous-very restrictive.
I put a 2001 engine in my 1999 EXPY. Next month will be 2 years and it is still going strong. 32k miles plus on the new engine. 260 hp vs. 235 hp. The only connection that was slightly different was the position of the heater hose fitting at the rear of the passenger side. The original heater hose (molded) fit ok. I believe this is an improvement made to eliminate the heater hose leaking onto the back ignition coil pack. Good luck on your replacement, it's not a difficult job.
