I have a 1984 f150 300 inline six with an automatic transmission.
This just started a couple of days ago, my truck makes a high pitch whining noise while driving, it isnt a belt because i just replaced all the belts when i replaced the water pump.
I was listening to it the other day and as i was coming to a stop my tranny shifted down and it stopped, but it pretty muhc does it all the time.
my transmission seems to shift pretty good, so myt question is could this whining noise be my transmission going out, because some guy told me that and i dont know whether to believe him or not.
Does the noise follow the RPM of the motor?
Is it emitting from underneath the transmission?
Then it sounds like your alternator bearing (just kidding)
It sounds like the front pump in your transmission is about to pass on to it's next life!
Good luck!

hey thanks for the help, but i found the problem, it was coming from the carb, the gasket underneath between the carb and the motor was messed up, so i pulled the carb put on a new gasket and its fixed..........
Note to Srercrcr;
If you have an automatic transmission, anytime the motor is running the torque converter is spinning the transmission pump, even when it's in park!
When the pump starts to head south, it whines!
And even when they are dying, the transmission still works good!
