I know there are some shoty headers out there, don't recall who makes them, that give you a little more clearance but you will still have to loosen or remove the header to get to the starter. You just wont have to lift the engine. Just as info, when I had my engine rebuilt by a racing shop, I ran into this same problem and they told me why not go with the stock exhaust manifolds. They are alot cheaper and good to 500HP. You aren't pushing more horses than that are you?
No....I am only running about 425 HP or less. But some of that horse power is due to having headers on the motor. My race shop told me the same thing, but it is only because of space. If you want performance, a cooler engine, less ware, better sound etc. etc. etc... Ya gotta have headers!
I may just get some custom done.
What if I could find a 2 into 4 collector system so I could remove half of the header? That would give me plenty of room to pull the header and get the starter out. Who makes one of those?
Levergun,
If you are refering to a Tri-Y headers, Stan's Tri-Y makes them. He has a pretty good selection. He even has them in Stainless (if you can afford them). www.stans-headers.com. I'm thinking about some too.
Those look pretty cool. Don't know if they will solve my concerns though. I was thinking of something even more custom then that. Something that would allow me to take off half a header. I don't know. I need more room!
I saw a kit online somewhere that is a put together header kit. Basically you start fitting pipes together until you get the design you want and then just weld them up. Dont remember where I saw it, but I know I saw it.
Nice looking headers! Yes, if you have the mini high torque starter in there then you should be able to do it without lifting the motor.
I was looking at one of those starters as well. The CVR with the adjustable mounting. Course, if I have to change a starter somewhere, having a special order starter won't do me much good either.
I can pull my starter off and with out doing anything, I put them on 1978
when, I put in the 390 engine. Well alot of yrs. have passed. They are 16ga.
Black Jack Cat headers 3/8 head plates. I ordered these through Sear's mail order way back then they had stuff like this. Over 80,000 miles on them and
only had to pull the starter once. 20 Yrs ago laying in the snow in the parking lot of a auto parts store one day when the temp. was down to 29*degrees Sure glad that's all, I had to do.. On my 4x4. Now, I'm going back to the stock exh. manifolds with 2 1/2'' pipes plus a H pipe..
orich..
You are not the first person that has mentioned going back to the stock manifolds. This would take care of the problem for sure. So it looks like a custom fab header may be in the works.
Gtex,
Excellent pictures of the Tri-Y's. Thanks. I want a set even more. Just need to convince my wife why the kids and us don't need to eat for a week or so.
