On the advise of a friend who was told by a ford tuner that a "big" stroked 460 ci 1991 SD EFI F350 with an E40D can't pass smog without going to Mass Airflow, I got a 9000-L58 Ford Racing conversion designed for a lightning 150, again on the advise of the tuner. Haven't tried to hook it up yet, looks nice, came with a modified ECC-IV, 30 lb injectors, new filter box with Mass Airflow sensor built on and plug-in wiring harnesses, but I was wondering if anyone else in the forum has actually tried it on a 460 EFI.

one of them foreign things for milage
I have a '91 460 and am interested in this project, please keep us posted on your progress. Get clear in your head exactly what you need before you spend a ton of money.
There have been several people here who have done the SEFI conversion, I don't recall one on a 460. I think I remember mention of a california emissions MAF 460.
I haven't really figured out to contact a member so if you will instruct me I will let you know what happens. The project is already started and I am committed to it. And I suppose I have the money for it as I am saving over $40,000 by not buying the F350 Powerstroke I would have liked to have.
So I have already got the converstion kit, and my nephew is the one who knows and believes in this tuner who has been guiding us. My nephew already used him on his dad's F-150 and on his own mustang (with a Vortech supercharger) nd F350 V10 also with the Vortech. The tuner says it won't run with what I am doing to the engine without re-burning the chip which he says won't be that good, or MAF which he says can be tuned precisely, will pass smog (California) and will probably get much better milage than the SD.
I got all summer to get it done. Trying to go camping pulling my 13,500 lb trailer up to the Sierra's in September. By the way i'm 60 - what does it mean you are a senior?
Senior means number of posts or time as a member, not sure which one. Please do post about you progress here. If I see anything that I think will interest you, I will post it here.
i put a lightning on a 302. the computer does not know the size of the motor just the air that is going through the sensor. the firing order should be the same as a lightning/mustang. 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. which is important because your injector pulse changes from bank to bank(left side right side) to sequential. the only thing i would do to the lightning kit is get bigger injectors & a mass air meter to match. the lightning uses the E4OD so you should be all set there too.
I would like to put a stoker in my 97 460. The best I came up with is find a California truck they have the mass air set up. From what you say the they's are wrong. Please keep this thread updated. Also over 60 and given name Gary
I agree with lindsay....ditch the stock air meter and go with larger injectors for that monster. I did a swap on my GEN 1 L and pegged the air meter with roughly 7lbs of boost and minor bolt-ons.
my truck is a californian w/mass air. but i upgraded to the lightning one for more power. so yes you could use one of those but i think the lightning one is better. if you want i will sell my stock mass air comp cheap if you want to go w/one of them.
The Lightning MAF kit comes with 30 lb injectors. Seems enough to me but my tuner says he might want to go even bigger depending on how it dynos. Still missing parts and won't get to start building the engine until after the 19th.
The 30's and the air meter were the first things to go on my blown 351w....they couldn't supply enough fuel at the top end, which is why I had to upgrade to 42's and a better air meter.
If this is going to be a mild set up then the 30's will should plenty...yes the dyno will show if they aren't because your A/F ratios will climb/lean out at higher engine speeds.
If you don't mind a used kit, you could check the classifieds, every now and then someone upgrades to a FAST system or DFI and sells their Ford or Pro-M Mass Air Conversion kits cheap.
Just curious...have you checked into a custom grind Speed Density cam for your Big Block???

No idea what you are asking. Sounds like you are saying they could have ground a cam to fit the old SD profile? No I haven't looked into that. I'd like to know though.
As for the 30lb injectors, I doubt I will be going over 3800 rpm and maybe 350 or 400 hp. It would seem like they would be big enough although I know the 19lb one just barely support 235 hp. Just towing and what I need is the low end torque.
You can get a custom grind cam that is Speed Density Friendly. Crane and CamMotion are just a couple that have been sucessful in doing this...just tell them your combo and they'll grind a cam that will allow you to make more power with your SD setup.
