'96 full sized Broncho with 5.4L. Not sure which auto tranny is in it.
Took it to Jiffy Lube yesterday for their $90.00 tranny flush service. I just noticed that Mercon is recomended (on the dip stick and in my Haynes manual). The invoice says they put Dextron III in it. Will this be, or is this a problem?
Dexron used to be only for GM vehicles, but I believe that today's Dexron III is a multi use fluid that can be used for all makes. The dip stick says Mercon because that is the Ford brand of fluid.
DEXRON-III. This is a specification for General Motors vehicles, but many foreign manufactures specify a DEXRON approved ATF as well. DEXRON-III can be used in transmissions that call for DEXRON-IIE or DEXRON-II.
MERCON. Most late model Ford vehicles specify a MERCON ATF. Most ATF's that meet DEXRON-III also meet the MERCON requirements.

In 1980, Ford Motor Company completed conversion to new automatic transmission designs requiring M2C138-CJ (friction-modified) fluids replacing Type F fluids for factory-fill. DEXRON®-II was subsequently approved as an alternative for service-fill of these transmissions. Ford started production of a new automatic transmission, the C-5, incorporating a lock-up torque converter in early 1981. It was determined that the M2C166-H (Type H) describes the performance required. M2C166-H is similar to M2C138-CJ but also includes the Allison C-3 friction retention test. Syn-O-Gen Universal ATF 751 is formulated to meet and exceed this Type H requirement and is recommended for service-fill of the Ford C-5 transmission.
During the 1970’s, DEXRON ®-II fluids became the standard for service-fill in North American produced automatic transmissions.
Oops! I thought live2hunt wanted to know "which tranny fluid" I do not want to endorse here so feel free to delete the post. sorry if I crossed the line
As long as Jiffy Lube's Dexron III meets Mercon standards, then you are fine. If you are in doubt, call them. I have put Dexron III in my 1990 when topping it off before fixing a leaking seal.
