blinkers

Sorry, i know this question has been asked like 10 times already but it was never really fully answered. I just aquired a 68 ford, and the turn signals and emergency flashers don't work at all. I checked and the wires are good under the column all the way back. Does anyone know the problem that could cause these important lights to not work? The emergency 4-way plastic piece is all broken off inside the column it feels. Do i have to buy a new switching unit ( seen they are expensive, but cant find an exact one for a 68) , or should i take off the wheel and mess with it inside the column?

Check both flasher relays first. One up behind brake pedal and the other up behind headlight switch near kick panel. Then check fuses. Then check grounds. If that fails, then mess with switch. Switch is the hardest part. Might even think about swapping columns, might be easier.

Ditto on checking the flasher relays. They control the blinking of the lights, so if they are not functioning the lights will not blink.

If the relays seem ok, then the switch is the next thing to think about. If you have brake lights, but no turn then the switch is not completely broke. The brake lights function thru the turn signal switch since the rear brake light is also the turn signal. If you actuate the turn signals and loose your brake light(on opposiet side) then the switch is faulty.

Electrical problems can be really tedious to track down, especially with lots of people giving you ideas. The best you can do is start with one thing and work your way down the line.

Ok, try this. Turn your ignition on (don't just turn the ignition to Accessary). Turn the turn signal as though you are making a left hand turn. Then, turn on the Emergency flasher switch in the glove box. Mine works that way. It's either a left hand turn on the turn signal or a right hand turn. I've seen other folks on this forum who have the same wacky thing. It doesn't work any other way.

Ok, I am sort of lost here, but o.k. i guess that works too. Would all the bulbs need to be replaced in order for my blinkers to work? I think one or 2 may be blown out, are they on the same circuit? The lights in the dash come on when i switch the blinker on left or right, but they stay on, and dont blink and the lights in the back don't come on at all? anyone troubleshoot this?

Yes, you need bulbs that work in order for the blinkers to work, it needs a load.
