I understand that the 04 have 3 more variable vanes among other things.

I've driven a number of different vehicles with turbos, including a motorcycle with one and all had some lag - some more than others.

I had a '88 Ford Turbo-coupe T-bird that I really liked. Generally it's lag wasn't bad.

Compared to the other vehicles, predominately sports cars, the 6.0 can be bad some times - especially when cold.

I think some of you are confusing turbo lag and overall turbo performance.

Turbo lag is the delay in response that occurs when you push the accelerator.

Turbos obviously perform much better when more fuel is being used by the engine. More fuel=more exhaust=turbo spins faster=better performance. Therefore, you will notice better performance when you are running at higher RPM.

The effects of both of these were improved greatly with the EVRT turbo.

IMO the 6.o has much more turbo lag. The reason I say this is because under a load (19,500 lbs) and taking off in 1st gear from a dead stop I only push 8 lbs of boost @1000 rpm. It's a dog off the line. It wont get out of it's own way. But by 1500 I'm at 14 still way off the 34 lbs I push at peak @2700. From there on the turbo has "spooled up". I run the R's to 3,500 and shift to the next gear dropping R's to 2,700 still pushing 34 lbs of boost never leaving the powerband. (here is where I walk away from all stock Cummins equipped Dodges. They make all their power down low.) Diesels need boost to make horsepower. Remember the days of the old 7.3 IDI non turbo. What a gutless wonder. Had torque like no ones business though. It reminds me of a 6.0 running under 1,500 RPM.

These motors MUST be warm before you move the truck, be very, very carefull...when cold.
Cold they should be a bit of a sloth from a start.

Thats strange? the turbo lag in my 6.0 is worse when it is warmer weather. I does seem to get better as it runs longer.

Air density, affected by temperature, barometric pressure, humidity and altitude, all have a direct affect on a turbo's performance. The less dense the air, the more the turbo has to "work" to give the boost needed for the performance you want.

Agreed……have a question on that. is there a difference between the VGT valve in early 02, 03 and new ones. Any design changes you know of. That being an 04 design.
I know they added more vanes to the unison ring but i do not think there has been a change to the VGT solenoid itself.

I should have said when the engine is cold. When the engine is warm and the outside temp is cold (well cool any way because I live in San Diego :-) it runs great.

I wish we could confirm that they are the same or not…..that being the solenoid itself!

Oh yeah I agree. When it is hot out and then the air temp. cools off because of impending storms and what not the 6.0 comes to life. I just wish it ran that like that all the time. I wonder if a cool air induction system would help?

I had a VGT Solenoid go bad. Truck was surging and causing an overboost situation. Will find out if the VGT Solenoids are the same or not. And one more question, who is the manufacturer of the new Turbos on the 6.0?
