My 2001 Eddie Bauer started making this noise about two weeks ago. R100 trans, posi rear end, 3.73 gears, four corner leveling. Right before I come to a complete stop, I hear this loud Bang or CLUNK coming from somewhere around the transmission or transfer case. I never sounds the same every time, can even sound like it comes from the rear end. The truck has 58,000 miles, tranny fluid flushed at 40,000. I tow a boat (3,500#) and an enclosed utility trailer sporadically in the summer. Had the truck in the shop two months ago for bad shocks and a upper controll arm. I have been under the truck numerous time and cannot find any thing loose. The output shaft to the front wheels seems like it has alot of play. I am taking it into the FORD shop tomorrow and see if they can fix it and the air compressor that sounds like a machine gun. Has extended warrnaty to 75K. Any one else have this problem?

Just an up-date for the guys who have read this. The Ford shop called today and they have the transmission out of it. Sounds like they may have to replace it. Not very heavy duty I think for the best tranny that ford makes!!
