Boost Gauge Range

Greetings,

I was wondering what the range of a Boost Gauge should be.

During my research of various gauge websites, I found that they are available with a vaccum range, 0-30psi, 0-35psi and 0-60psi.

Will I have a need for the vaccum range ?? And is 0-60psi too much of a gauge ?

Thanks,
R

No idea about the vacumm part but 0-35 psi is all you need.

Just wondering....

The '05's are supposed to come with a boost guage.. I wonder if it'll be a good one with the actual readings, or more like an idiot guage with a color band??

Lets hope its not the high-low type that is not very usefull.

After looking at the settings on my x-monitor i now think a 30 psi gauge is alright.

When I went out for a drive with the diesel tech and his WDS computer, I was hitting 31 psi in third gear WOT. He commented that was good.

I like my X-Monitor. I also have the CES (cool engine shutdown) module. It keeps the motor running until the EGT has dropped to the value you chose.

I stop, turn off and remove the key, hop out of the truck and walk away, and the truck just keeps clanking away until the temp drops to my preset temp - which is 350 deg.

If someone should break in and try to put the truck in gear and drive away the truck will stop running as soon as the brake pedel is pushed. It will also turn off after 10 minutes if the temp hasn't dropped to my preset.

The max boost that I've recorded so far is 24.5 lbs. This includes all conditions, including towing.

So....Do those folks that have a 0-30 psi gauge wished they had a 0-35 psi gauge ??

Or is the 0-30 psi doing the job for them !

Thanks,
R

Anybody know what the specs call out for a max boost with this turbo and engine?
Keep in mind because you get 30 psi one day that you will get the same boost the next day. As conditions (temperature, humidity, altitude, air density, etc.) change, you will get different boost values by a couple pounds.

According to the mechanic at Ford anything over 23 lbs is good and folks that are seeing anything over 28 are nearing an overboost condition.

Around 24 lbs is the most common number that I see reported here.

I have the edge juice wich shows the boost and I have seen it as high as 41 so you should get a boost guage that will go to at least 40. I have heard of others getting as much as 45. The module plugs into the MAP sensor and is simple to install.

My truck when the WDS was hooked up was reaching 28.6 PSI at shifting. Which my tech told me was pretty stout.............

I am waiting for my guage to get here. Can anyone tell me where to plumb the guage to get it working. This is my first diesel and all this is new to me.

Thanks,
Mike

The CES module only works with the X-Monitor because the CES module looks at the display data out of the X-Monitor computer.

Both products are made by BD-Power, a subsidiary of BD-Engine Brake, or visa versa.

I bought mine direct from BD because I couldn't find it on the Motorhaven site. The CES is a new product for BD and doesn't show up on their web site that I could find, but if you call them they'll know what you are talking about.

The neat thing about the X-Monitor is that you get all three measurements, Pyro, Boost, and Tranny temp in one compact package that doesn't require removal of your pillar handle. You can set alarm limits and the unit will flash the display, and with CES will activate an audio alarm as well. The X also keeps track of the max values you hit for each of the three measurements.

Over the last week, my max boost was 24 lbs. In another thread Vic-Ferrari suggested buying a 35 lb boost gauge if you go with the Supertuner because it can spike over 30 lbs when running one of their programs. For a stock truck a 30 lb gauge would probably do the trick for 99.9% of the trucks.

I have a Supertuner on order so I'll update everyone with my new max once I reprogram the truck.

Daryl
