There was a width change in the 9" rear end for these trucks right around 72 or 73. The old ones are wider than the later ones, i think. i got burned on a swap back in 1989. I tried to swap a a 1972 F150 entire rear end into a 76 F100. It didn't work. I ended up just swapping the forward carrier and everything is still working today.

Spool in a pavement pounder isn't a great idea, you need some wheel speed differentiation around corners to make your tires and drivetrain last. You can use a locker though . Check out www.tractech.com and www.powertrax.com for lockers that fit the 9".
