flywheel removal

has anyone encountered a flywheel on a 351 that became toothless? im wondering if this is just mine or if it happens a lot. does anyone have any advice or tips on taking out the flywheel. i know the obvious, take driveshafts, transfercase, and tranny out...but are there any tips on how to do this? im just trying to find an easier way to work is all. thanks every one

IS THE VEHICLE AUTO OR MANUEL TRANS? if it is manuel you can just replace the ring gear. you still need to take out the fly wheel though

If your Bronco is before fuel injection and much computer controls, and you have access to an engine crane, it may be easier to pull the motor than it is to drop the rest of the drive train out. On the 83 I used to have, I found this to be a much quicker way to change the clutch. Remove hood, drain water, remove radiator, disconnect fuel and electrical, unbolt from exhaust and transmission, lift out. Later models with all the plumbing and wiring for EFI are another story tho.

well i just about have it out now. i put it up on the lift and i had a hell of a time with the crossmember. i hate that thing! all i have to do now is just unbolt the bellhousing and pull it out. i didnt know it would of been so simple. if anyone was like me and was wondering the steps, ask me, i know now, lol. thanks for the advice everyone.

the whole thing has to come out. start with hoses and wiring, not a lot to deal with. then drop your drive shaft(s). then you disconnect the transfercase from the transmission, if its 4x4. the crossmember that supports the rear of the transmission is sort of tricky to get out, you have to work it out while the trans is supported. and then finally you can unbolt the bellhousing from the block. after that then you have bolts on the backside of the flywheel that hold your torque converter in place. your going to have to turn the engine to get to all of them but its not too difficult. after that then you have your main flywheel bolts and thats all. i dont think ive left anything out. i finished taking mine out in a day. i did use a lift and a trans jack so i dont know how hard it is to do in a driveway or a garage. hope it helps
