My 04 350 Supercab is in the shop having both doors painted due to the rubber mouldings at the top of the cab going hard and rubbing the paint right off the tops of both doors. It is so bad on the passenger side it has flaked right around to the outside. She was new in Nov. and has 20K on her now. Check the inside top of your doors! How often does a person look? I only noticed when I decided to pass a chamois over the insides to clean the dust.

I forgot, they are also installing ALL new rubber on both sides.
I have an 03 F250 SD CC and I check the doors regularly. I am a clean freak when I get the time. I clean the door jambs frequently (wash/wax) and I have not had that problem. Maybe an '04 thing.
This can happen to any painted part that contacts rubber parts. It works great till dirt gets in there and makes it sandpaper. You just have to keep it clean as mentioned and waxed ideally. I myself go through my vehicles when I get them, and I use some clear sign vinyle (outdoor grade) and put a patch in the areas of contact. ie. hood stops, weather strip contact areas in doorways, etc.
The clear hardly shows, and you can take it off later w/o hurting the paint. I learned the hard way years ago with a Toyota pu and a canopy with a rubber window boot. Nice shineymetal around the cab window when I took it off.
clear sign vinyl ... spray on ... brush on? this is the stuff that is also used for masking when painting .. and you can peel it off later on? just trying ot figure out what product your having good luck with.
No, this vinyle is the same as the colored material sign and graphic shops cut to make signs & stickers etc. Just that it is clear. I have also had luck in the past finding a color that just happened to match my vehicle color.
My 04 Super-cab is doing this at the top but only on the drivers side.
Yet another quality control issue.................
Go to a Dirtbike shop as they sell the clear stick on vinyl squares pretty cheap. They use it to cover # plates from roost damage.
Great product with many uses.
ahh, vinyl like a sticker, i gotcha. we used to have this spray on vinyl at my old job, that said it laid a sheet of vinyl u could peel off. i never used it, but took a couple cans when i left
Well the truck is back and it has new rubber and they just blew-in the tops of the doors. Looks pretty good for now. The new rubber is just as hard BUT the little piece on the top which caused the rub is mucho softer! We'll see what happens and I'll keep this thread updated.

BTW this was NOT caused by dirt, it was the rubber which was rock hard and sharp which caused the problem and there is no way I am going to go sticking clear plastic all over my truck to cover for a quality control or engineering issue! It is however a good idea to put the Scotch tape along the rockers to help with the foot wear.
