drive line play

I'm a new owner of a 99 250sd, it seems like a major amount of play in the driveline. I read a thread on this site about lack of drive shaft lube that causes a clunk. Should I go with that fix? It box cars every time I take off.
Thanks

Talking Drive Shaft Lube, a cure for Drive train play?

I'm the owner of a '99 250 2 wheel drive SD and I experience a sort of clunk when I start or stop quickly. The truck drives really well otherwise. I would love to hear from anyone regarding the drive shaft lube, and what goes into checking/changing the stuff. I am sold on the V10 and overall ride of this truck, and would rather keep her running tight than trade in on a new truck. I only have 70,000 on her! Just broke in! Mahalo

Driveline Noise

Well, i had the same driveline clunk when pulled out from a stop. I removed the driveshaft and lubed the slip joint like most others have but it did not completely fix the problem. It was something i just lived with for the last 6 months. I had the truck at the dealer two weeks ago for an oil change and i asked them to check the Rear LS diff, It did not seem to work any more. one wheel spun no matter how hard i tried to keep the LS locked. turns out the rear limited slip was broken, The dealer replaced the LS and when i got it back the drive line clunk was gone. the truck feels nice and sold when i pull out now and both axles remain locked. all along i asumed it was the driveshart slip joint....

Kind of, yeah. A buddy who bought a '03 brand new said that he has had the same problem and is just living with it! I'm having my drive shat lube done on Wed. 5/12. I'll post the results. I guess that if I do have to live with it I will, 'cause I love this truck. But I'm also going to keep looking for a fix. Aloha

Regular grease will not do the trick - gotta be teflon.

Do a search here on "clunk" and get the details.

Let me know if you come up with a fix. For now, I am just living with it as well. Tx

I was very interested in the LS thing. Mine box cars so bad every time you take off. I got under the truck and moved the driveshaft looking for play at the u-joints. The only thing I could see was a lot play at the rear end. Looking at the diff. (pinnion) you could turn the drive shaft turn almost a quarter of an inch each direction before the wheel would move. Seemed like too much, I got under our suburban and checked it's play, it was tight. I can live with it if I have to, but I don't want to tear anything up either. I use the truck for work (service) and can't afford to have it out of commission. Thanks for any additional info.

¼” doesn’t sound bad. How many miles and what year model truck? And you can’t see the slack in the splined yoke area. Also that plastic coating can bind in the splines and give you the impression that they are tight. You will have to actually put the shaft under force to feel the free play.

What's the verdict, 808Golden?.

the truck is a new to me 99 250sd with 55k miles. I don't remember it having the play when I first drove it, but it might have. I can tell you that unless the drive line is loaded, it has a major clunk when you take off.

If that "major clunk" was due to the play in the ring and pinion, then you would hear a definite roar while coasting.
Have you tried the Teflon grease fix yet? I know it sounds inconsequential what grease you use, but even the top Ford mechanics agree that only the Teflon will do the trick. It’s the amount of pressure a grease can withstand that makes the difference.

Next time have a friend reverse your truck, then, as you stand beside the truck directly across from the carrier bearing, have him to shift to forward gear. See if you can isolate that “clunk” and determine if it’s coming from the driveline or the diff. Then you can narrow it down to either the yoke or a ujoint, or perhaps, the rear diff.

I may have missrepresented the clunk. It is more than just noise, it's major play. When you leave from a dead stop ( just normal driving) there is a gap where nothing happens. I described it as a box car effect. By the way there is no rear end noise that I can hear. As soon as I can get a helper I will try to observe what is going on underneath with the drive line. Thanks

That is exactly the hesitation that a worn yoke presents.

Give it a good look-over.

Your on the right track.
