I just bought a 1997 F-250 HD 4X4 with Powerstroke Diesel. Truck has 175,500 miles on it. It is in excellent shape, except for one problem.
The transmission seems to go into neutral when the accelerator pedal is
released (even at highway speeds of 40-50-or 60 mph). Rpms drop to
idle and truck continues to coast freely as if out of gear. When accelerator
is depressed, rpms rise and transmission re-connects and appears to operate normally until throttle is again released and the whole thing starts over again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What you are most likely experiencing is your TC lockup. That is the way it is designed by Ford. There are aftermarket devices that can do away with that. At low speed your truck will shake and shudder if you do not have that feature. Any of the aftermarket items are designed to work only at highway speeds.
I am not sure if the Trans Command specifically addresses the TC lockup or not. I am in the process of installing the SP Diesel Exhaust Brake on my 97 PSD 4X4 and it comes with a feature that allows you to switch the TC on or off.
Hope this helps
