iam going over my options for cams for the 360 build up and have ran across the crane dual pattern 343942 ....would i need to modifie the valvetrain from stock to run this cam as well would it perform well with ported heads? .....thanks for any and all info
-kyle
i am also running this cam in my current 390 build. i asked advice on this also and was told that the stock valvetrain would be fine if i didnt spin the thing to eternity. it was also suggested that i spring for a set of adjustable shafts and make sure your spring pressures are on the money. it should all be up to snuff with that. cant wait to get mine running i think its gonna be a great cam.
thanks six niner ...i think ill go with that cam then i was as well looking at the crane 343901 but id didnt seem like it would have as much "lope" to it as the 343942 would so well see when i slide it in...as well six niner what type of intake and carb are you running or going to be running? thanks again
-kyle
That's a bit bigger than I expected. .563" on the lift. You'll want to upgrade to their reccomended springs or something comparable and consider some adjustable rockers. Make sure your shafts are in good shape.
I know guys have run that much lift on stock valve train. but, the typical reccomended limit is about .550"
gtex do you think i should look for something more in the 550 lift range or do you think ill be alright with the 563 lift or will everything come apart the first time i mash the gas....thanks for the info
-kyle
ok i now found yet another cam i like that compares well to gtex's recomendation of nothing more the .550 lift here it is:
comp cam 275DEH Dual Energy Hyd Flat Tappet,
advertised duration- 275/285
duration @ .050" -219/232
lift intake/exhaust- .515/.541
110 deg. lobe sep.
does anyone run this cam and if so are there any pros or cons about it thanks for the info

thanks again for all the info iam about a month away from the initial tear down and rebuild so i still have room for a few options not too many though the money is a little tight but i think once its said and done ill be happy with the results as well have once again another beast i can go out and play with
im running an s code 4v cast intake and a 600 or 750 cfm carb ( havent decided yet on carb). i went with the recommended valve spring also. that is very important in my opinion. good luck, hope this helps.
thanks for the info guys ...six niner i will be running the edelbrock performer intake with holley 600cfm double pumper carb then later down the road ill probly upgrade to the performer rpm intake and the complete list of the modifications are: headman headers, 2 1/2" exhaust, flowmaster 40's, 4"x18" tips, edelbrock performer intake, holley 600cfm double pumper carb, ported 390 heads, edelbrock double roller timing chain, comp or crane cam havent decided yet, dual electric fans. when its all said and done iam hopeing to be pushing around 400 hp. i would like to beable to find a gear drive for the motor but so far all that i have found are not feesable. but thanks for all the info guys.

I just got off the phone with Crane..and they told me the springs that Comp sold me would cause premature wear on the cam CRN 349521 for those of you that dont know what were talking about...
I still cant find the card with the part # in it from comp cams But I do know it was like 135lbs on the seat and 395 on the nose?
And for our cams Crane said 120lbs on the seat and 344lbs on the nose...
Now with that being said..the Stock ED Heads rpm are 115 @ the seat and 280lbs open!! Thats why you had valve float? I wonder what your comps are?
For running Hydraulic lifter cams and soilds under .600 the stock springs are supposed to be fine? Right.... So That might have been $180 down the tubes for me? See if my wife can find the card and the recipe? Russ
Will when i put my cam in, the speed shop told me , if you want to do it right the 1st. time , get a match cam set , i did , new cam 268/502 COMP cam,new valve springs, lifters, double roller timing chain/& gear set, Edelbrock manifold with a 750 double pumper Holley carb.all on my 75 F-250 390 eng. C-6 , runs great sound "bad a$$" oh and she sucks down the gas and at " $ 2.10 per gal, (#%*#) i drive easy. LOL
Actually, I had already replaced the Edel springs with the reccomended Crane springs. I never even ran the Edel springs.
The Crane springs resulted in valve float. They actually measured below 300lbs@open according to the shop. That shop replaced them with some serious Comp springs. When I last talked to Crane, they said my roller lifters were good for it and they new what Cam I'm running. They never said anything about premature wear on the cam.
My Comp springs are at about 430lbs open....yikes! It ran OK, but munched my pushrods cups, since they were the wrong size. I'll be upgrading to the next level (stronger)pushrod from Smith Bros and getting the correct cup size when I reassemble the motor here shortly.
Well Greg I dont know??I have the comp on the heads now..and there like 135lbs or so @seat and 395 or so@ the nose?? I'll just spend the $70 and get a dam spring tester and test my own instead of taking someone's word.. @180 a pop..the tool will pay for it self!! I cant see how anyone can be off 50lbs open?? Russ
