Rod Knock or ??????

1995 Explorer 2-door Sport - On my way home from work today, I noticed my oil guage fluctuating from the middle of the guage to no pressure. I immediately pulled over and checked my oil. It looked OK at the stick, maybe a quart low. When I started it back up, I noticed a fast whinning noise, almost like an alt bearing which would increase with the rpm of the motor. You can not even hear this sound while driving normal spped, only when stopped and you slowly rev the motor. Since my oil level looked OK, I contiued to drive home about 6-7 miles further. When I got home, I started the motor and crawled under the truck. Using a long screwdriver, I isolated the sound coming from the oil pan. Oh No !!!!! I have heard rod knocking before and this does not sound like that metalic knock sound. Sounds as if the pan is hitting the flywheel kinda thing. I don't recall running over anything which would cause a dent in the pan. I also could not see any dents, course it was getting dark.
Can anyone tell me what this could be? Also, if it is a rod, can the pan be taken off or dropped enough to replace a bearing?

How loud is this knock? Some 4.0's make a bit of noise due to a tad of wrist pin slop which Ford claims is normal. I would hook up a real oil pressure gauge and see what's going on. You could have nothing wrong other than a failed/failing oil pressure sending unit. BTW, and assuming the oil pressure gauge works the same as the Ranger, the gauge is really an idiot gauge. It's designed to read midrange when the oil pressure hit about 7 psi. This is why I would put on a real oil pressure gauge to diagnose what's really going on and to see where you're at. At this point, I would NOT conclude that it's a bearing knock or a bad oil pump.

The noise is not loud at all. You can't hear it if you are inside the truck. It is a light taping noise instead of a hard knocking noise. You may be on to something cause my oil guage has always shown in the middle of the guage and that day I noticed it was fluctuating up and down sometimes. Like I said, my oil level was OK. Good point, I'll hook up a real oil pressure guage and see what I get. What should it be at idle, etc. ? I have had the truck since 28K miles and it now has 127K, no problems at all. The tapping sound just started so I don't think it is normal.

My Chiltons says 40-60 psi @ 2000 RPM for a 94 - 95 4.0L. No listing is given for idle, but if it were mine I would like to see at least 12 psi on a warm engine; 20 psi would be nicer. Remember, with a cold engine and oil, the pressure will read higher.
