I called about a shutter problem around 30 and 60 MPH. I have had this in three times for the same problem and was told to use high octane gas as a fix.
I called today and was told that Ford released a software update for the Escape - mine is an 01. It appears that they completely erase the software and reload.
I guess this shouldn’t surprise me; I am use to software updates for my computer, so why not the car?
Perhaps I should have asked him if he could send me a zip file and save myself a few hours. Escapeupdate.ford.com J
I just had the trans update, was yours trans or engine ? Did the shutter feel like you were running over a whole bunch of speed bumps only when accelerating ? I have had mine in twice so far, first time they change the wheel bearings, second time they reprogramed the trans computer. Still NG...
I had the shuttering problem on my '01 at 19K miles and yes, it feels like driving over rumble strips. You need to change or flush the fluid to get rid of it. It happens when the fluid has deteriorated from heat. The PCM update helps prevent the fluid from becoming overheated by changing the torque converter lockup strategy. Mine was done under warranty. They just did a double drain and refill using 8 quarts of Mercon and reflashed the PCM. No problems since.
If you continue driving it with the shuddering for too long, you risk damaging the torque converter clutch to the point where the torque converter will have to be replaced.
