i've never seen any "converts" that look worth anything. I would think it is not that hard to rebuild, i've replaced the motor gear in my '96 - it's tight, but not that hard to do..... Good luck with what you decide.
why go through all that trouble of modding it, just fix or replace the window motor, it not that expencive, and you will save yourself from future headaches.
I have seen someone who took a Bronco top and cut off the roof and made it a Fiberglass canopy style. He did just that, incorporated the tailgate glass as his rear window, like a pickup truck, then he used the flat portion of the roof as part of the "toneau" style to cover the back... The window was stationary though.. looked pretty good..
