I'll probably get flamed heavily for saying this, but IMHO, churches and money rank right up there with insurance as far as scams go. What I'm saying is, give me a reason why I should donate 10% of my income to a church?

Go and have the tech do the heavy duty services, he checks off each item he does, then puts his initial at the bottom. Scan the page when you get home so you have a record in case the booklet gets lost. That is the best way to avoid ripoffs and not spending too much money, imo.
I have NEVER seen a Ford service tech check off scheduled maintenance as performed on any of my vehicles, and have never seen a booklet in a vehicle that had anything but the owners' writing (if that) in it. Is this a regional thing?

The local TV station had a segment this week about contractors telling homeowners about problems that don't exist, especially repairs needed to the roof that older homeowners can't verify. The owners want to prevent future problems so they autherise the work to be done. I have been both an unlicensed and licensed remodling contractor for many years, doing all kinds of repairs. When watching the program, it didn't occur to me that I should get my bowels in a kink because they were insinuating the whole industry was corrupt and call to badmouth the station. I just considered they were talking about "the other guy" because I never charged for something the job didn't need and always showed the customer what he was paying for. I made sure any subcontractors I may have used weren't gouging the job. In this respect the auto and home repair industries are similar. I, like some of you have stated, always had a clear conscience. I don't feel the need to take it personal and get all defensive when someone makes a statement that isn't in high praise of my profession.

After reading about the subject matter of the TV show, do you trust your home repair contractor who you never met, and have heard there are bad guys in the business, that have done unsatisfactory work for you before ? What a racket!
Have a nice day..... :~)

> why I should donate 10% of my income to a church

Because God will bless you for it. Many churches help poorer members when they fall on hard times, like I have been helped in the past and like I have helped others. What goes around comes around when you least expect it. In many churches the pastors take no money, I even know one that works at Pepboys as a manager and takes no money from his church.

> I have NEVER seen a Ford service tech check off scheduled maintenance

When I was not able to work on my Aerostar, the Ford tech that worked on my van did it for me. He put a check next to what he did and circled what he skipped (some things do not apply to certain models). Usually all you have to do is ask. When I worked in a lube bay, if the customer requested it I was more then happy to do it for them. Just ask them to leave the book on the pass. floor mat so I can pick it up and put it back without getting anything greasy or having to dump out the glove box.

On my van at least, it even came with a vinyl book type cover it slide into that you could fold the pages back into as each page was done.

If I can find my stuff, I will post a pix for you.

not to hijack the thread here but "REBOCARDO" what would you recommend to a guy with a 99 ranger 4 cylinder automatic approaching 90K miles that has had no service except trans fluid every 30K miles, oil changes every 2500-3K miles, air filter once a year , working on its second set of tires, and front brakes just replaced for the third time? im thinking about what i should look at and do or have done if i cant handle it myself? ( this question is meant in all sincerity

"I hired one of the most honest workers for my remodeling business, and he in time, married a daughter of a big time G.M. dealership. He admitted to me later that he, as installed service manager, was paid a commission of the work he scheduled. You drive your car in, he determines the damages, and you pay. Do you still trust your dealer? What a racket!!.."

You did insinuate that the whole industry was corrupt. Just because he get's paid based on what he sells, doesn't mean he sells people anything they don't need. If this guy was honest when he worked for you, why wouldn't he still be honest? Don't come in here acuusing an entire industry of being corrupt and then get all huffy when some one calls you on it. There are plenty of honest and dishonest people in both industries.

Why do these post still show up?

People say dealers are dishonest.
Salesmen say they are not.

Are too!

I've read posts here where people refer to the "stealership." Of course there are lousy, thieving dealers out there. I've helped more than a few people get rebates that other dealers were trying to pocket. But I STILL get angry when I and every other upstanding dealer gets thrown into the same dirty pile. Maybe Jerry can tell us what HE does for a living, and I'll take a few cheap shots at him based on his occupation.

On the other hand, maybe someone can teach me how to ignore these kind of remarks. Something I've always had a problem with. I just take this stuff too personally.
My first job (14 years old) was at a Ford store and the owner was the most honest gentleman I've ever met, and he required that same honesty from his employees. Because of that, he sold Fords (Mercury and Lincoln) to the same people, their sons and daughters for many years. He once told me, "If you tell the truth, it's easy to remember what you said". My current Ford dealer is like that, I have bought from them (same salesman, same service manager) for over 15 years and I drive past two other dealerships to reach them. I believe that MOST dealerships are staffed by honest people, not just because it is the right thing, but because it is good business practice. To brand all for the actions of a few is foolish. One man's opinion....
