Question 302 or 351W

What engine would guys reccomend for my 73 bronco? It has a tired 302 in it now, and I dont know weather to rebuild or drop in the Windsor. Cost is kind of a concern for me, so keep that in mind......Thanks

If cost is a real concern, I would just rebuild the 302. A 351W rebuild should cost about the same, but you have to acquire the engine first and then do the motor mount, exhaust, oil pan, and hood modifications (and possibly a bigger radiator) to put it in, which all cost money.

Are you kidding, Bigger is allways better. I like the way the 351 will climb hills with plenty to spare when the 4 cylinder and Buick v-6 jeeps are sitting at the bottom maken excuses.

big is good
bigger is better
too much is just right

(then again depends on budget and that theory is null and void)

The windsor will give you a lot more bang for your buck. Bored .030 over with a good edelbrock intake and descent cam and it will make a lot of power. Watch your overlap and duration on the cam though, you don't want to move your max hp to high in your rpm range or you'll always have you foot in it. ( I made that mistake once )

This ain't right. Engine mounts are the same, and exhaust is VERY close. I actually used Mustang shorty headers on my Windsor and haven't had a problem. Your current radiatior should work fine. The only things you'll need are the engine, maybe the pan (used ones are easy to find) and MAYBE the hood.

I'm doing a 302 to 351 in a couple of weeks. If I'm hearing this right, I will need a oil pan, headers and thats it.. I trust you guys because you've been there. Why is James Duff trying to sell other parts for this conversion? "brackets, radiator" I'm hoping I won't need a hood because of the body lift thats on the truck. I would like to use the stealth intake with the Holley T/A carb. from what I've read it seems like a good combo. Any input? Thanks...

dk5122, dual sump oil pan you will need.
headers because of he extra height
brackets only if the 351 doesn't have them. 302 brackest will work If you look in the catalogs you will be able to see what they are trying to sell you and make your own.
water pump inlet must be an early style(69-70) pasanger side. any thing newer will be drivers side. no problem to convert. but you will need timing cover that matches. the 302 timing cover will work.
radiator should work if you order a good, new water pump. I bought a Mildon from Jegs and don't have any heating problems.
the hood I think you will need. I had to have one.

I thought I read that a body lift would take care of the new engine height? Not sure though...

I think the body lift will work if you want to run your old side draft air filter housing.

The snorkel I havn't seen for sale anywhere. With a suspension lift, tires and a 351 my air filter height must be around 5 foot off of the ground.

My V-10 SD filter housing would probably work good for a snorkel set up. after looking at it I could make it work. then you would just need to get to the carb/air filter flange.
don't know how many are availabe but a lot of guys switch to the cold air kit. should be able to find one used on this FTE site.

That is sweet.. Never looked at it that way. I'll have to measure mine. I have 3.5" suspension & 3" body, w/36" tsl's. Prob. close to that also? I know my F-250 doesn't like deep mud holes/water.. But thats no lift w/33's

With a little work to the hood brace and a 1" body lift my 351w will clear the hood. That is with new stock type motor mounts, offy 360 intake, preformer carb and 2 3/4" air cleaner. Get the dual sump pan so your diff will clear the pan. I have the stock radiator and it works fine 175-190 degrees all week in moab over easter, and the same for here in grand junction. Exaust, headers for 302 bronco work fine, mine did rub on the right frame rail at first.
