is it possible?

is it possible to be able to prime an oil pump, but for it not to hold pressure? 2nd time i put a new oil pump in(same one) and still not getting pressure. pulled the dizzy tonight and put an extra shaft in the end and its snug as a bug. motor is starving for oil. when i had the old pump in before the swap, i would get 50lbs at startup cold. i think i might get another pump. any suggestions on what kind? running a 88 f-150 2wd, 302, c-6. tired and ****ed off, but cant give up yet though. have another motor to put in but am keeping that for my 1970 1/2 falcon. thanks

By priming you mean inserting a shaft into the pump and spinning the shaft with a drill (with dist. out of course)?

no, pouring oil in the input and spinning the shaft by hand, did the same way on my mustang and no problems, but also got that pump from a machine shop.

Ok, but now the pump is back in the engine? Spin the shaft with a socket and an extension on a drill and you should feel the drill drag down when the oil pressure comes up, then reinsert the dist. and recheck when the engine fires up.

ok, this pump gives me about 40lbs @ 2500 rpms and then 5 lb at idle almost bottomed out. and now my lifters are tapping at idle, like oil starvation. do you think i still need to do the drill prime?
