A friend of mine has a 97 PSD automatic with 65k on it and it has that psd erratic idle when the engine is up to temp and sitting at a light. If you blip the throttle a little while in drive it surges up and down a little in rpms and then settles into a slight hunting action. Much like an old Detroit Diesel with the buffer screw needing adjustment. Any one have any ideas how to fix this.
It is probably the cam shaft position sensor causing it. If his serial number is before 375549 he needs 1825899C99 or if serial number 375549 or higher he needs 1825899C93 -- these are the latest revisions for the cam sensor. If it is not causing any problem more serious than the one you stated, he may just want to wait until his present cam sensor fails and replace it at that time.
Thank you, thank you, thank you very much. I did raise fuel pressure on the 95 super duty wrecker at work today and it took 95% of the shake out of it when idling. My friends truck has 60 psi fuel press. prolly enough. The 95 S.D. had only 40 and I shimmed it to 65.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-May-02 AT 10:30 PM (EST)]My '95 PSD has a strange rattly, clicking sound sometimes when idleing and just starting off. It causes the entire truck to shake. I've been told it's the clutch.... Could that gas pressure thing help? If so, how do I raise the pressure?
thanks

Were you refering to what I said? I forgot to add that the fuel pressure sometimes is the culprit. The screen that I was refering to will make a big difference when its cleaned.
Try this out, has instructions. There is someplace w/ pics but I can't remember where I saw it. Anyway all PSD owners need to know about this. Basically the screen clogs up and the fuel bowl doesn't fill as it should. I also changed the fuel filter at this time even though it wasn't particularly dirty. I noticed that the fuel in the bowl looked kinda like it had a black tint to it. I had to reseat the gasket after I cleaned it as I got it a little crooked and the fuel was much cleaner looking after the screen was cleaned. The filter also looked to have little black specs on it which looked a lot like the crap on the screen.
