Setting timing?????

Replacing the timing chain and tensioners on a 1998 Ford Explorer 4.0 SOHC. There are no timing marks on gears. Anyone with info or suggestions please email or post. Thanks in advance for any help given.

From: Cleveland, TN area.
If the crankshaft has been rotated during your procedure make sure the number one piston is at the top of it's stroke (TDC). The crankshaft keyway should point straight up. This is if you had made sure it was at TDC before taking off the chain.

Hope this will help.

You should also be able to verify TDC by removing the #1 cylinder spark plug, stick a long rod in there til it hits the top of the piston...turn the crankshaft, watch when the rod goes the highest (having a Mrs helps here). Unfortunately, I'm not sure which cylinder is #1, probably front drivers side. Don't put anything in the hole that will break.
