I'm having an intermittent steering problem. I have a F-250 4x4...no suspension modifications. At times after making a hard right turn the steering wheel wants to stay over to the right. When I turn the wheel to the left past center the steering wheel jerks over to the left as if someone grabbed the wheel....(not to fun at 70 MPH or when pulling my boat). I changed the tires but I still occasionally have the problem. I checked to make sure nothing was broken or bound up but nothing is loose or broken. Any suggestions?
It is a 1996. I had a mechanic check the ball joints, he said everything looked fine and just my luck it didn't do it when he test drove it. He jacked it up and looked at the tie rods, ball joints, etc, etc....it all checked out good.
I'd recommend visiting a knowledgable wheel alignment shop and get them to check the front end out and do an alignment. Since you have a few miles on your F-250, it is likely that the front leaf springs have sagged a bit and have changed camber angle accordingly. Ball joint wear or even worn out leaf spring bushings can cause odd handling when making turns.
Any sort of alignment or wear problem is magnified when you are towing any sort of load, especially something like a boat that can change tongue weight as you go over sways in the road.
