oil pump shaft?

oil pump shaft?

i have been trying for 3 hours to get this shaft to go in the dizzy hole. ive tried putting up in the hole first, and putting it on the pump, but it seems all i am hitting is air. anyone have a foolproof method for getting this in.? and when you think its in, how do you know? any help would be greatly appreciated. also broke my 1 piece gasket, so i had too walk away for awhile. thanks

alright, i believe i got the shaft into the dizzy, the pump bolted right up flush to the block. if it wasnt in the hole it wouldnt bolt up right?also with the pump bolted up the shaft moves up and down(less than 1/4")but not side to side. feels like its in a sleeve. am going to put a new screen and tube on, and also fill the new filter. anyone know how you can check if the shaft is in correctly,i would hate to do this again. pump has been primed again. also since i started it last would it be safer to turn the motor over without the coil wire to get oil back into the lifters? appreciate any responses. thanks

heres an update. turned the crank over with a 15/16, pullhandle. shaft is in the dist. bolting everything up now and ill see if everything is ok
