transmission problem or.....
I have a 1997 ford ranger ext cab 4x4 6 cyl. When i slow down at a stop sign or stop light the truck starts to jump forward and produces a knocking sound. It feels like the transmission is knocking. It surges forward and the rpm surges slightly as well. When i say surge i mean that about every 1 second when slowing down it goes....surge then i hear a "clunk" (clunk sounds like transmission)...so its...surge, clunk...surge, clunk.....about 5 or 6 times or until i come to a complete stop then it idles perfect. This clunk only happens when im coming to a stop. the "check engine" light is on. Its has stalled a couple times at this low rpm. Thanks for any responses. GREAT SITE! thanks, jim

I had a similar problem with my 00' 2.5L 4x2. The surging problem ended up being my IAC. The connector on the IAC was vibrating loose under normal driving conditions. When I would come to a stop it would surge(no clunk though) to about 3rpm's on the tach then go back down to normal. If I stopped hard I had no erratic idle out of my truck(the force of the stop was reconnecting the loose IAC connector) I would check there first, and yeah pull codes. It could also be something in your EGR system malfunctioning. As for the clunk do you have the approprate amount of fluid for your transmission(manual or automatic)?? If manual did you try bleeding your cluth to make sure there isn't any air in the line?? Don't know if this will help and I hope you get it fixed soon.Chris
