I have an 88 ford ranger with a 2.9 and was wondering what adjusts the amount of gas that getts dumped into the injectors. Because our ranger just keep dumping gas in it and its ont burning any of it and the gas mileage is horrible
I think the most common issues with fuel problems in our year trucks are:
1) O2 sensor is bad
2) FPR is bad (gas is leaking into the vaccum line)
3) Fouled plugs / bad wires / cap / rotor
I have the 2.3L and there is no adjustment to the amount of flow you can make. It might be different on the 2.9L, but I don't think so. You may want to check the plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Then the fuel pressure PSI, and the fuel filter. Keep us posted and let us know what you checked.
I would start by testing the fuel pressure, check the vacuum line for fuel pressure regulator for gas, gas = bad FPR , and pull the codes (see the tech info post, pulling eec=iv codes.).
