valve timing question

when the marks on the cam gear and crank gear are aligned isn't the mark on the balancer supposed to match up to tdc on the timing cover? also, there seems to be two different sets of marks on the cover. one bolts to the cover and has notches cut into it and the other is cast into the cover.which one do i use? '85 f150 with carb. any replies greatly appreciated.
thanks

thanks for the reply dj8667. when the marks on the gears are aligned the mark on the balancer lines up with 30 degrees before tdc. does this mean that it jumped timing?if it did, i'm danged if i can see how or why.both gears look ok to me and the truck seems to have only about 150,000 miles on it.thanks for any help.
