When out driving i noticed truck was wandering all over the place to the point of being dangerous. Pulled back in garage to adjust backlash in steering gear and noticed only had one bolt holding steering box in place and it was loose. Put in new bolt and tightened other one and adjusted sterring backlash. Handles much better. The box is not the original and i don't think it is an original replacemnt. Is there any way of verifying make and model?
. . . but can't post them here and am not allowed (trusted?) to e-mail them to you because I haven't been on the board long enough and/or submitted enough posts. Sorry.
If you want to throw caution to the wind you can e-mail be directly and I will send you the pictures of an F-1 steering box.
The steering box for the F-1 ('48-'52) is distinctly different from the one used in the early F-100 ('53-'56), although the two share several components, including the worm gear and recirculating sector, bearings, shims, covers, and lash adjuster.
The F-1 box has the worm located beneath the sector, while the F-100 is located above it. Also, the sector shaft in the F-1 is the same diamater as that in '37-'48 passenger cars; the F-100 sector shaft is larger.
Thanks for the update! I'll tuck that info away for future reference - now if I can just remember where I put it........ I've heard the boxes were the same, but never from anyone who had the two side by side.
