Broken cruise control button

Mom's got a loaded 98 explorer sport. she had me take a look at her broken cruse control button, and I'm stumped.

The steering wheel has the buttons on either side of it, and the top part of the whole assembly on the left side, (basically the area under the "ON" button) seems very loose and sloppy, like whatever holds them onto the steering wheel is broken or loosened up on the inside. Is there any way to fix this or does it need to be replaced? Is it a do it yourself job or does the dealer have to get in there. I don't want to mess around too much around the airbag. I can't even tell how I would get to whatever it is I would have to get to.

By the way, thanks for the tips on replacing the broken seat handle, got that done today and it works again! Lets just hope she dosn't brake the new one, that was the first one I ever found in a junkyard!

To get to the cruise buttons, you ahve to remove the steering wheel airbag. Disconnect your battery, turn you lights on to make sure the power is pulled from the system (do not have to, but I hate messing with airbags also, and hate to take the chance). Once you do that, you will see 2 push covers on each side of the back plate behond the steering wheel - one on each side. Take a small screwdriver and pry those off. Under them are the bolts that hold the airbag in place. I think they are 10mm. Remove them, and remove the airbag unit.

You will see all the bolts for the cruise controls and horn unit from there. I think they are star head bolts (torx heads). Check for any broken parts from there....
