towing with NOS

I have a 03 ranger with a 3.0 liter engine and was wondering about Nos as a possible power booster when towing a trailer?

Bad idea. NOS is for short bursts of power, not long term use. Also not real good for the longevity of the motor, and must be set up perfectly to avoid engine damage. Best to leave the NOS to the drag racers.

What are you towing and how much does it weigh?

Best thing you can do is make sure you are towing within your tow limits, and if not then get a bigger truck.

For increasing towing power for towing within your limits, you can lower your axle gear ratio, change the exhaust and intake and put in a power chip. Other than simple stuff like that, you're looking at internal engine mods which probably wouldn't be worth it, since you can trade the truck for a more powerful and capable tow vehicle and come out further ahead in the end.

im towing a 4000 lb flatbed trailer. I actually got a supercharger for my ranger which has really made a difference but you know has it is, its always fun to try for more power. Thanks for the info.

Superchargers aren't always good for hauling, well on the engine when your hauling. If you plan on hauling that much on a regular basis, I'd step up to a larger truck.

The supercharger sounds like it would be fun to drive in that Ranger . As for the towing, 4000 lbs is alot for a 3.0L Ranger. I agree with acerockola, you should look into trading up to a 5.4L F150.

A large tank of NOS is only good for just a few minutes of boost at most. I'm talking 5 minutes maybe 10 max with a beeg tank and a lot depends on the application, I have heard some are good only for about 90 seconds. When towing you would go thru $30(SWAG) of NOS in just a small set of rolling hills.

Plus like the other guys said NOS is really hard on the engine. And mistakes can be almost instantly fatal to an engine.

Better to get your engine breathing easier. Maybe a turbo, that's what the big boys use. Of course with a 3.0 you are marginal on towing power anyway.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson
