Will not start (sometimes)

I have a 1978 F100 LWB, 351, 3 speed on the column. Sometimes when I try to start it, it just makes a single click noise. The wire going from the battery to soleniod will get hot if I do it several times. I can let the truck sit for a day or two and come back and it will start right up. I have cleaned all the connections at the battery and the soleniod and tried a different battery. I have not checked the starter connection yet. I figured out last night that after it made the click noise that I could rotate the key from acc to start position several times real fast and I could get it to start. Do ya"ll think it might be the ignition switch or what? Thanks for any help Brandon

Next time it does it rap the solenoid with the end of a screwdriver and then try to start it. Sounds to me like the solenoid is burnt and hanging up.

My truck was doing that a few months ago and it wound up being a problem with the distributor. There is a piece at the bottom that spins and hits the points that fires the cylinders. I can't remember what the piece is called but all I did to fix it was wedge something in it so it would spin again and it runs as good as new
