302 or 351?

is there a sure way to determine? I've got a truck with an unoriginal, unknown engine size.

1975 ford f-100 with edelbrock heads
4 - barrel edelbrock carb
don't know firing sequence
plugs face //// on left, \\\\ on right
5 bolts on each valve cover

is there a code on the engine block?

The fire order will tell you if the cam is a 351W and it is in a 351W motor. I just look for the ribs on each side of the distributor. The valve covers are the same. I know the inatkes are different but I acn't recall what the dimensions are of each. Maybe a 302 is like 9 inches wide and a 351W is 11 inches wide?

Firing order for the 302 is 1,5,4,2,6,3,7,8
for the 351: 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8
If for some reason the firing order isn't in raised numbers on the surface of the intake manifold somewhere, find number one on the distributor and see what plug the wire next to it goes to. It'll be #5 or #3 and that will tell you which you have. On a 302 the top edge of the water pump is even with the top of the deck. On the 351W the deck height is around 1" taller than the top of the water pump. Or, look at the thermostat housing bolts. If you can get a socket on the bottom bolt to remove/install it you got a 351W. If you have to use a wrench instead, it's a 302.
