I have a leak in my power steering sector. Can I just get a seal kit to fix the box or do I have to get a new one. If I need a new one what other word does the power steering sector go by? Power steering box?
so when a mechanic says you need to replace the power steering sector because the power fluid is leaking out it does that mean replace the box or just that gear?
The mechanic is using the wrong term. I believe the sector gear is integral with the output shaft. The sector gear is called "sector" because it is a "section" of a complete gear. You need to re-seal the power steering box or better yet get a rebuilt unit. Many times the seals go bad because the bearings are bad. If there is any slop in the gear box you need the rebuilt unit.
Most of the junkyard units will have a lot of slop in them. When a good gearbox comes in many of the junkyard operators or employees pull them off for their own trucks or a buddy's.
Check them for slop. Read what I said b4 again. We see that all the time around here for certain parts. The good ones are gone, the sloppy ones are left in the trucks.
I have to agree with Tourque1st. I'm pretty leary of moving parts from junkyards for our trucks. Most have been scavaged of any good parts. From my experience I rather spend the extra money and not have to do the job twice. Just my 2cents.
Manchris,
I rebuilt my power steering box got a rebuild kit from Oreilly's for about $30. If I had to do it again I would have bought a rebuilt one, rebuilding it myself was pretty time consuming. Check <!LMC Truck>our site sponsors, you can get a completely rebuilt box, new bearings and all for about $130.
