I think wildcard30 has passed along some good info on his experiences. Tnx. Now hear this. My new Ford F150 did NOT have a Motorcraft filter installed from the factory, ponder that guys. I still have it in a box for comparison. It is grey, has a different hole pattern and stampings than the FL-400S I have waiting for my next oil change. So if Ford dosn't think enough of the Motorcraft filters to install them OEM, where does that leave us? (just conjecture) I still think Motorcraft are ok, but I belive they put Champion on at the factory. Lucky for me all my vehicles have vertical mounted filters, so no biggie either way.
Used Fram exclusively on a 88 Mazda B2200 bought with 40,000 miles. It had lifter noise upon start up and during driving. It apparently did not hurt anything because I drove it to 190,000 miles before I junked it. It was embarrasing though, one time at a stop light a guy yelled over, "Hey buddy, ever check your oil?" I did not know during ownership but now feel it was the orange can. Have used MotorCraft on my 89 Ranger, no start up clatter or lifter noise whatsoever at 111,000 miles. I have had oil changes at two different Ford dealerships in Colorado for almost three years and they both used MotorCraft filters while car was under warranty. I do not think they would intentionally use an inferior filter for oil changes while they are responsible for your warranty. Just my experience and opinion.

Well after reading "all" the posts i guess i'll put my two cents in. I've worked for Licn. & Mercury (kind of like Ford ) for over 36 years, i've had some split at the seam , but can't remember having any bleed off like that, i've used FL 1A,& FL 400 FOR ??? LONG TIME , i own a 73 F-100 (360) Engine with 294,000 miles on the foctory engine, 75 F-250 (390) modfied with 46,000 miles, and 95 mustang ( 3.8) V-6 with 148,000 mile ,all start good no noise, i do in all run 20w50 oil ,but then you can always run into a bad one.
the earlier post sums it up. Motorcraft filters are not made by ford; motorcraft filters are made by puralotor. So if you dont like motorcraft filters, its because you dont like the puralator company. I also agree with the earlier post about AC delco; i wouldnt care either way if the filter i install is marked motorcraft, puralator, or ACDelco.
Motorcraft filters are at the top of the quality list. Consider all filters from "Planet Zeneox" suspect (see above) but otherewise motorcraft is a wise choice. (and cheap too, get them at walmart) .and finally, imo fram absolutely and totally suck.
