turbo cooldown

I know that ford recommends letting a psd idle down 7-10 minutes after prolonged high speed driving and/or towing but what about shorter trips around town or highway of 10-15 minutes at speeds of 30-50mph? I usually let mine idle for a minute or two, is this right or should I increase or decrease the time. Oh, I own a 02/f-250 7.3psd thanks bruce

I've not personally heard the cool down expressed in time, but more in degrees. I know you're supposed to let the turbo cool down to 350* before shutting down. I don't have guages, so I can't say this categorically, but I've been told that in everyday driving, even if you've been on the freeway, that by the time you work your way through a reasonable amount of city driving, into your neighborhood, and into your driveway, your turbo is cooled down enough. What to watch out for, is being on the freeway, hammering along at 2200-2500 rpm, pulling a trailer, and then diving into a truck stop to fuel up, and shutting down without letting it cool off.
Cheap insurance would be to get a pyrometer installed. They're not very expensive in the grand scheme, and will help put your mind at ease.
I hope this helps.

I have the turbo temp monitor from issopro and it automaticly shuts the truck off after she cools down @ 300 degrees. I cannot go anywhere without the truck taking time to cool down. Time will vary depending on speed but she always takes some time.

over and out

For those of you who have the pyrometer, how long does it take generally speaking, if you have been running around at 1700rpm at around 70 degrees outside to cool down to approximately 350?

Thanks

About one minute under the conditions you are talking about.
I drive to Laughlin Nv quite a bit and with an outside temp of 110+ after having just driven 260 miles at 75-80 I have never had to wait more than 2 minutes for the truck to get to 300 degrees

Try the turbo diesel lifesaver, at www.genosgarage.com. I think it'll take care of any cool-down worries.
