FE id question

Hey guy, I'm new to the forum and here's my situation. I bought a truck from a guy who had made some modifications, here what he told me: the body is from a 1972 f-100 ranger (checks out with the VIN on the door), the frame, suspension, motor and tranny are from a 1974 highboy (looks like a highboy lift). My problem is with the motor, he said it was a 390 (he put an edelbrock carb and intake on), but while messing with the power assist the other day I noticed the #352 stamped on the front driver's side of the block, but I can't find the VIN on the frame. If I'm not mistaken 352 was also an FE engine. Is there any chance that it is a 352 and not a 390? How can I tell the difference? thanks, nate

the 352 cast on it doesnt mean anything, most FE's have 352 casted into the block, the only way to tell if its either a 360 or 390 is to do a stroke measurment, otherwise you cant tell the difference between FE's, 360=3.5 stroke 390-3.78 stroke, good luck.

Correct the 352 is not indicative of engine size but it does indicate the correct engine family. So it could be a 390 or 360 (or any other engine in the FE family).

Thanks guys, I'll take his word that it is a 390, I just wasn't sure about the block stamp. Thanks again

One of the 4x4 frame VIN's is on top of the passenger side frame rail just behind the front axle, might need a rag & wire brush to clean it up and see it.
