diesel mpg

I own a 02 f-250 auto trans sc 4x4 long bed psd that with 5000 miles on it and I am only getting 11-12 mph empty, around town. what the hell is up.I was expecting better mileage, like say 14-15 around town and 17-20 highway. Is it that the engine needs to break in longer or what? I sure hope it gets better than this. Is anyone else experiencing low mph with there new trucks? thanks

Mine is an 02 F250 4x4 sc sb auto, 1st tank form dealer 16mpg. 2cnd tank 17mpg. Both fill ups were after mixed driving, City/hwy, and were calculated by miles divided by gallons. The over head was off by a few tenths.

My 2000 F350 16,600 miles, superduty, PSD, automatic, Lariate, longbed, 4X4, 4.1 rear with LS, 1/2 tank of diesel and 500 lbs in the bed, 21.5 to 22.3 mpg with cruise control. This is on flat highway runs of 50 miles or so at 55 - 60 mph. No wind and 80 degree air temp. Highest "hill" is 100 foot up in the center of the Seven Mile Bridge here in the Florida Keys where I live. Towing my 12,000 lb (scale weight) 8' wide, 12' high, 28' long travel trailer I only get 7.9 to 12 mpg depending on the wind in and out of overdrive without cruise control. I can keep it in 4th (OD) most of the time that way....Richard

Richard,

I'm curious, I'd like to know if you do any city driving at all and what's your mpg. I live in South Florida as well. I ordered my F250 deisel 5 weeks ago and I'm anxios to know what to expect under our weather conditions.

On another note, have you noticed the vast disparity in deisel fuel prices. I've seen stations selling deisel from as low as 1.39 to as high as 1.60 a gal. And the prices just keep climbing...Thanks Magnum1029.

Mine is a 2001, F250 PSD, 4*4, crew cab, short bed Lariat and in town I get around 13 to 15 MPG, but I bought it NEW and when I first got it I didn't do very good at all in facted it kinda sucked but its got almost 10,000 miles on it and its doing better, and on the Interstate it gets around 17 to 20 MPG and I live in Mississippi and we got ALOT of hills around here. I just got my Power Programmer and on this tank, which is my first tank since I got the Power Programmer but it seems to be going to do alot better. If you have the money to spend, if you don't already have one, I have enjoyed the Power Programmer it makes the Transmission shift alot smoother and get off ALOT FASTER.

You guys all have the newer trucks, ones that haven't had the opportunity to break in yet. I do believe that these rigs do better once they get some miles on them. Trucks in my era reportedly do a little better for mpg, yours for horsepower. Mine, with 130,000 miles on it gets 19+mpg at 70 mph (2000 rpm), and 18+ at 75 mph. She's only 1/4 of the way into her life expectancy, like a 20 year old girl. Pretty much in her prime, I'd say.
I believe that you should break them in the way you're going to use it, and she'll just get better and better as time goes by.

Quadzilla is right on. You rig is not broken in yet. From what I have read, this takes about 10-15k miles. I have about 16k on my 01 f-250 cc, 3.73 rear. On my last fill up I got 19.9 mpg. That was about 2/3 highway cruising at 65-70, and 1/3 running around in the hills of VT. Give it some time. Pay attention. You should see an increase in mpg as you put on more miles on your beastie. One caveat though. Some powerstrokes just get better mileage than others. This is what I have read on this forum. Haven't really heard an explanation as to why. Anyone care to speculate why some get better mileage than others?

Dream on re the 10-15K miles for breakin. I have a '97 F250 HD PSD SC
auto with 65K miles on it - I'm still breaking in.....

Your first big mpg gainer will be about 25K miles, then a smaller one
at 50K. Right now I'm getting about 19 solo, and 12 to 13 towing a
gross combined of 18,500. This is thru the "hilly" country of Western
North Carolina (lots of 8% grades).

When you break in a new truck, I wouldn't tow diddly until I had at least
1,500 on the odo. At that point I would dump the factory diff oil and
substitute a good syn oil such as AMSOIL; then dump the factory tranny
oil and put in a good syn ATF. Then it's get outta the way for the open road....

Happy trails

I have a 2001 F-350 PSD, DRW, automatic, with the 4.1, and 30,000 miles on her. As a fulltime RV'er I tow a 12,000+lb RV and travel over all different roads. City, mountains, and flat highway. Without the RV on I have been getting about 12.4 to 13 MPG. with the RV on 7.5 to 8.5 depending on the roads. I too was not happy with this and just last week ordered the Superchips Microtuner and reprogrammed the chip. Took it on its first 200 mile trip with the new program yesterday without the RV and got 16.6 on flat highway using cruise control. Thats a 3.6 to 4.2 MPG increase, and the power and transmission preformance was outstanding! Best money I ever spent on an after market product.

Sam, if you're getting 19mpg cruising at 80, then you've got one of the good ones for mpg. I'm lucky to have one, too. As you can see from my signature, mine's about as big and heavy as they come, and I still get the really good mileage. I think it's in the way they are broken in, but not being the original owner of this truck, I can't say for sure what was done differently.
Man, if I knew what causes one truck to do so much better regarding mileage, I could make a million bucks.

Well it's like this, diesels have a mind of thier own, none are the same. 22mpg like someone stated I REALLY DON'T THINK SO!! Anyway the real story is the diesel is its own end. If you purchased this truck to get gas MILEAGE then you messed up...they don't!!! I own two of them and pull 15,000# trailers and thats the ONLY reason I have them. If you bought it for fun and or mileage (sp) then you are not going to be happy. Diesels are WORK TRUCKS and that's what they do. If you are a family type guy then buy a gasser. The BEST I have ever done is 15 MPG with trailer HWY and 12 in town, no trailer on HWY 17 and in town 15....NUFF SAID. My trucks are down right tough and work like hell (65,000 miles a year each with 15,000# + behind them)don't expect them to be friendly or cost effective.:-staun

Well, I've gotten 18 mpg highway and today got 9.5 towing 17,000lbs. Still not broken in yet at 2200 miles.

Damn those little steers add up quick when you put 14 of them on the trailer!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Apr-02 AT 08:41 PM (EST)]Hi All and Magnum1029...These are the facts, no need to BS

Magnum1029 No real city driving. 5 miles to work, 55 speed limit for 4 miles and 1 mile at 35 mph, gorcery store after work sometimes. For this type of driving I get 17.5 mpg. I use my jeep most of the time. Got my truck to haul my trailer. Went to the Everglades again this weekend. 10.9 mpg round trip and 406 miles. 55-60 mph. In Key Largo the diedel is $1.32, Florida City $1.49, and Key West $1.59....Go figure!!! Richard
