you need to remove the cap and rotor from the dizzy then remove the tiny e-clip that holds the vac advance arm to the stator assembly. then remove the two screws that hold the vac canister on the dizzy housing and install the new canister.
Thanks. Just as I thought. Wanted to make sure I was not missing a step. Of course, one of the scrrews holding the cap on has been rounded off so will be a pain.
Also, the head of the screws holding the vacuum unit on are neither 1/4 nor a metric size. Does one need a specific set of wrenches for ignition parts?
When I replaced the vacuum advance on my 86 460, it was adjustable.
I had to take an allen wrench and turn the old one in and count the turns,
then bottom out the new one and count the turns while turning it out to set
it like the old one.
Not sure if yours would be the same. but thought I'd mention it...
Yep, the 8-32 screws broke on mine as well...and one of the screws inside the plate is toast. I think it will just be easier to replace the whole distributor...
Sheesh, my first Ford...interesting project it has turned out to be.
Just drill the screw out. No nead to replace the distributor. Use a good drill bit, get a small punch and punch the center of whats left of the screw and gently drill it out. Then retap the threads. Go to the hardware store and get an 8-32 tap. I can't remember the size hole you need for a number 8 screw, so you'll have to look it up. It may even be on the little package that the tap comes in. Then get the right size bit. It's really not that big of a deal. Even if you are slightly off it won be that bad. Your just holding the vacuum diaphragm thing to the distributor.
