Cleaning Oil Varnish?
Last night, I pulled the valve covers off of the 1990 351W EFI I am rebuilding and found everything underneath covered with a thick, hard oil varnish! The engine hadn't been run in a couple of years, and I have no idea what happened to it before I got it, and there is a really hard oil sludge running around the bottom of the lip. What is the easiest way to clean this mess up? I am not sure if anything inside is salvageable, but if it is I don't want to hurt it with some really strong cleaner. Would regular gas work? Simple Green? Kerosene?

When I get parts like that, I take them down to the local machine shop and have them vatted in a heated chemical solution for a few hours. Removed everything, even paint. But it is easy to repaint again, with the clean bare metal.
