Odd engine noise
I have been looking for an E-350 (my first diesel). Not many good ones around here. Yesterday I looked at a 97 with 63,000 miles. When I drove it it was hard starting, even when warm, smoked at first start, and had a noise like a stone caught in the brakes when I backed down from speeds of 35 an above. I told the salesman to check the brakes. The "mechanic" in the shop said the brakes were fine, it was the engine, and that is the way they sound. I have driven quite a few in the last two months of my search but never heard that noise. Is this normal? Thanks for any help. I posted this in the wrong place first, so I thought I would try it where it should be. Thanks again for any input.

The hard start it probably a glow plug relay, as for the brakes, i would not trust them. When my brakes went bad on my 00, they sounds like rocks on steel for 2 days, and i was doing a military unload and the truck never stop and almost went through a fence. I would ask for a better brake inspection or take it to a local shop to get checked out.
