Hood security

I see alot of locks available for vehicle hoods. Is it that easy to break into the vehicle engine compartment? Do thieves do it to steal parts or can they steal the vehicle this way?

Well on my 77 F-250 there is no inside release. The release is outside on the hood. If anyone wanted something under the hood they could just open it up.

I think it is done because thieves may try to steal expensive parts. For example, a friend of mine has rebuild a 1970 Chevy Nova SS - he keeps the hood latched down and has a chain locking it inside, as he has a lot of performance parts in that engine that he doesn't want to go missing on him.

Getting into the hood is a quick way to defeat any noise making alarm system.

That's why any noise making alarm system worth more than $5 has a hood switch.

I had thought about getting one for my 66 when i left it at the drag strip because you can easily steal an old car/truck w/ a piece of wire and a screwdriver/clotheshanger/etc anything that can jump the solenoid
But I never did.... figured if they watned it that bad, they'd steal it anyways

Id love for someone to try and steal my truck. They may get it started, but wont get very far cause they wont know the little fluttering of the gas pedal to get it goin or else itll flood and die. TAKE THAT THEIVES....thatll teach you to steal a Ford. They can defend themselves.

I could steal your truck in a minute...
Not that hard for an older truck/car
And I wouldnt need under the dash, a key or anything other than a piece of wire

How do you go about doing that? Could you share your knowledge so I will know how to guard against that? Thanks...

Depending on the year... but up until fuel injection and such
Run a power wire from the coil to the battery...
jump across the solenoid and bam... its a running driving machine

That is where a hydraulic brake lock and a chained hood comes in handy. Especially on older vehicles that do not have an ignition collar lock. Actually, I have been able to start and drive older Fords just by forcing the ignition inside the collar with my fingers.

Again, a kill switch is nice, that actually dirupts ignition. Or removing the rotr from the distributor. Ffew otehr little tricks you can pull.,....you can also install a kill witch, or series of switches tat run an electric fuel pump, along with one that allows power to the coil.

Wow. No wonder my friend keeps his '70 Nova SS chained shut!
