building a 351w. can or should i use the gt40p heads i found? they have oversized valves 1.94/1.54 stock are 1.84/1.45, the springs are .600" lift, 2 springs, stock not sure, but the thing that makes me wonder is the comp cam i want to use says to use 1 spring, .550 lift, will i damage or wear out the cam quicker?
Those heads with the single stock spring are supposed to only be used to .500 lift. If you have the right spring pressure double springs, they will be o.k. Make sure you can get maniflods or headders for that head in your particular application before you put them on. The last set I used, I ended up having to build a set of headders. IT is a pretty good head for a 5.0, but I think you can do a lot better for a 351. I am pretty sure you have to drill the bolt holes also.
Yes the bolt holes will have to be drilled out. Flow tech makes a set of headers that will fit those heads. Also you can search for headers that fit 97 and up 5.0 Explorers/Mountaineers
several companies make headders to fit the heads, Ford racing included. Just be sure there is a headder that works on that head in your application. We put a set in a 67 mustang, and all the headders that were supposed to work, did not even come close. Had to build a set. The head has really not impressed me power wise. You might be able to tell it on the dyno, but I cant tell any difference on the street between a shaved gt40 and the gt40p.
The GT40 and P heads aren't really a very good choice at all if you are wanting to make very good power. You'll make a little more power from a 351 with those heads than you would with a 302 with those heads but you still won't make much power anyway. Unless you are just totally strapped for cash or just determinde to use those heads there are many affordable heads out there that flow way better.
