The problem is we will get a terrible vibration going down the road, seems to come from the front end. Put it in nutrual problem still there. We've checked everything and it all seems tight. The funny thing is, the vibration will get so bad you have to pull over. Then we pull over and take off again and drive 100 miles and it's fine....... it doesn't seem to be linked to bumps and it seems to happen at higher miles per hour but not always? The truck only has about 38K on it. This just started happening about 2-3 months ago. Any TSB or anything out there you guys ever heard of? I'm really stumped here. any help would be awsome. Thank you.
Is it felt through the steering wheel? If so, have you checked the steering box for proper adjustment? Any chance of tires starting to seperate? I had two do that (one front, one back) on a car once and drove me crazy because it was not apparent on a balance and came on at about 60 mph. Same effect you are getting. Had to stop to get it under control, then it may not hit for a while. Tires were pretty new also.
The tread will seperate from the inner cords. At first, it is not noticable until you are moving. Then it will start to show an odd tread wear in that spot. It can become an air bubble if it gets to bad. Ask your tire shop to check it out.
My truck also had the exact same vibration problems. After a loud POP from my rearend one day and $700 later, the rear end was replaced and it hase NEVER vibrated, shimmied or shaken again. Seems the rear end was bad for a long time.
I had the same problem with my truck ( 99 F-150 4.6 4x4 ) drove me nuts trying to track it down. I too thought it was a front end vibration untill one day I was backing out of a parking spot and my rear wheels locked up, now I'm thinking rear differential. pulled ahead and backed up again,it was ok. next day the truck shook so bad I could barely keep it on the road. limped it home on the berm not going over 20 mph. ( luckily it was only about a mile ) jacked the truck up and found the right rear wheel would spin a little then lock up. turned out that the lining on one of the parking brake shoes came off and was floating around inside the drum.
im pointing towards a tire seperating......mine shakes BAD at 65 mph....I have to do 75-80 to smooth it out. sometimes its worse than other times, I need to get to a shop to get them checked out. rotating tires wont help, might just make it worse. Meaning if u put the bad tire in the back, it might shake more due to no weight in the rear.,
If your tire is separating, driving at freeway speeds may not be wise. I'm sure you've seen those pieces of tire lying all over the road- that would be the advanced stages of tire separation.
Not to mention having to replace a fender or bedside when it comes apart at highway speeds. Ever watch NASCAR when a tire comes apart? It ain't pretty!!
