Engine has strange noise-need help please.
I have been looking for an E-350 with a 7.3 (my first diesel). I test drove a 97 with 63,000 miles today. It was hard starting even after warm, and had a strange noise when you back down from about 35 and higher. It sounded like a brake shoe draging. I told the dealer it had a brake problem. His service manager said it was the engine, and that was the noise the diesel makes. It had some smoke at start up, but that seemed to go away. Does anyone else have that noise, or am I looking at a big problem? They are asking 10K for the truck. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

I had 182000 on a 96P/S, it never made any kind of noise like that! There was turbo whine on quick excelleration and then when I let off of it from high rpm but, it was a definate hi pitch whine. If the area you live in is anything like Houston there are plenty used P/S's to choose from. In other words look for one you feel good about.
