oil everywhere!

Just got back from a 3hour drive to houston and when I lifted the hood I had oil everywhere.
Mostly to the left side and puddles of oil on both.
Even splashed on the hood!
The truck ran fine. 70 mph most of the trip.
What am I lookin at here?
Is it a rock arm gasket?

When it's really oily, I usually degrease and power wash the engine clean. Then run it while I look for the leak.

It could be the valve covers, front and rear of intake or the front crank seal. Look them over good and see what you find.

Make sure the dipstick is still there and check the oil filter. What is the oil level now. How much did you lose?

The dipstick is still there and there is no oil on the hoses closest to the dipstick.
I lost alot.
About a quart.
I read in another thread that perhaps it is a distributer o ring.
At the risk of seeming like a clueless lady where is the o ring?
I have the haynes manual and it shows me the distr. cap.......

You would have to completely pull the distributer out to get to the o-ring. I think that 73Custom might have it with the front crankcase seal. Where is the most oil spray at? You will need to clean the engine to find the source though like 73Custom stated earlier.

I cleaned the oil up
and drove it for a couple of miles and there is no sign of more oil.
Most of the oil from before was on the left side of the left manifold(?)
Please be patient with me...Im just learning!
it is a 1979 f100 302

Was it on the front of the engine too? If so, then it's probably the front timing cover seal. If not, then possibly the valvecover gasket.

Wonder if the vent is clogged up on the oil fill cap and the crankcase built up enough pressure to blow oil out the valve cover gasket? Just guessing here! You will probably have to top up the oil and repeat the same driving condition to duplicate the same result. Not the whole three hour ride, just long enough to get the same results. Do like they said and clean it up good first.

A couple things...
One - I climbed underneath and it appears that all along top left edge of the oil pan is just caked with oil and chunky residue.
It definately seems that the oil may be coming out from behind the altenater
or some where in that area.
Two- How do I get that much oil off of the engine?
And what do I need to make sure doesnt get wet?

I like to use "Gunk" engine degreaser. Don't get the environmentaly friendly non-flammable crap either. Buy the white and orange can. When the engine is cool spray it all over and let it sit for a couple minutes and then blast with water. I usually take mine to a car wash to use their pressure washer and avoid having grease all over my driveway. Be sure not to spray the distributor too much. Not a big deal if you do, take the cap off, wipe it and let it dry - everything will be back to normal.

Did you check the level of the power steering fluid? When I had oil spraying around the engine compartment the PS pump was the source.

I dont have power steering in my truck.
No power steering/ No power brakes.
But I am getting pretty certain it is what LXMAN1 said.
It seems most of the oil (althought it is everywhere ... and I MEAN that)
seems to be behind the timing belt/ pulley/vibration damper area...
I gotta tell ya I have little idea what I am talking about but this forum has been such a remarkable tool.
Thank you all for the quick and helpful response!
All information is welcomed.
Does ford offer classes on specific truck maintianance and repair?
Sure would be helpful.

You can buy engine degreaser in aerosol cans that shoot instead of spray.
Get a couple of them.
Grab another person to go to the local wand car wash.
Buy or Borrow a sets of HD ramps (good for 5000 lb).
Take along a big piece of clean cardboard or a tarp to lay on.
Get a pair of safety goggles.
Make sure the engine is hot when heading for the car wash.
Once you get to the car wash & after applying degreaser to the top of engine paying close attention to stay away from the Distributor,Coil Carburetor & Alternator, put the truck up on the ramps.

Put the cardboard down..... degrease everywhere under the engine.

Let the degreaser do it job for about 15 minutes.
Take something to drink, you'll need it,oh ya ,wear old clothes or coveralls.
Get ready for a mess.

Start spraying underneath again ,doing the top first will get water & crap everywhere.
Once done underneath, take it off the ramps and do the top.

Start it and take it for a spin.
