fuel pump wires

According to the in-tank fuel pump instructions you just crimp the positive and negative wires with butt connectors but it would seem to me these wires shouldn't be exposed at all in the tank. I guess the orginal wires at the top are exposed too when the tank is full and it splashes up so....but i still would like to hear what someone else says before i blow myself up . Any thoughts?

I had the same concern when I replaced my pump 2 months ago. I used the butt connectors and I have not blown up yet!! I remember having lots of wire hanging around. Make sure the extra wire does not interfere with the float movement.
