When they say that the converter will lock up what does that mean? What does the truck do when it is locked up? Also, I have seen an upgrade for converter lock up, How will this upgrade help out the truck?
Inside the torque convertor of a 'lock-up' convertor, there is actually a hydraulically controlled clutch that locks the engine to the transmission input shaft (much like a manual transmission) thus eliminating most of the slippage in a normal torque convertor. The reason for the clutch and lockup is: One, to reduce transmission temperature while cruising. When the torque convertor 'slips', it is actually pressurizing ATF and forcing it against the stator and driven half of the convertor. This is where 95% of tranny heat comes from. Eliminating the 'slip' effectively significantly reduces trans fluid temps. Two, Eliminating the 'slippage' by providing a direct driving link to the transmission reduces engine RPM by about 250-300 RPM at a cruise thereby increasing fuel economy.

Oops....
Upgrades for convertor lockup will cause lockup in two or three gears (second, third, as well as fourth) at steady speeds and light throttle which lowers tranny temps.
cleatus12r - where does a person get such an upgrade and what would it cost? My truck's a '96 w/e4od transmission. Is an upgrade available for it?
Thanks for the info
