On one of our old work trucks the emblems I believe were aluminum too. I used a Scotch-Brite pad (3M) on it , painted it black, then taped off the back ground portion, Scotch-Brited again and sprayed chrome (chrome paint came in arisol can from paint supplier). They have made it a year so far and still look good. Was alot of work, but was worth it.
